𝟲𝟰% of our clients have never tried lash extensions before! The current US market for eyelash extension services is 💲𝟰.𝟲 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻, and of course we are wondering if we can expand that market by elevating the experience to a new level. At our Ulta Beauty pilot, we've been finding that a large majority of our clients are those that have been sitting on the sidelines until now. 64% say that they've never tried it before. Expand we will. We're in the largest unstudied market you'll ever find. In fact, though the services side of the business in the US is at least $4.6B, you'll never find a study on the services side of the market. What you'll find is a bunch of studies on the market for artificial eyelashes: the products like strip lashes, cluster lashes, etc. that are sold in beauty supply stores and drug stores. That $1.8B product market includes the extensions that are used in the service we provide, but the extensions themselves only represent about $2 of a $200 service! I have potential investors tell me all the time they think that our market is $1.8B because of the bad terminology used in these reports, and I get frustrated. I coach stylists that I work with to compare month by month from the previous year to the current year AND break it down service by service. I also recommend to do this quarterly and annually to project profits and set goals that are attainable. This strategy not only gives you clarity on where you’re creating the income, but also empowers you to strategically market what you’d like to create more income on and, potentially, eliminate services that don’t light you up anymore. I had the great pleasure of sitting down with Dave Knox and Forbes to discuss Nori, Inc.'s growth journey to date. Here are three key learnings Annabel Love and I reference as a three person team that reached eight-figures in annual revenue in under three years: 1. Invest in Innovation! The e-commerce market is flooded with brands that have undervalued the importance of an innovative product. Product acquisition is too expensive for those that are simply rebranding a product or service that already exists. 2. Nail one channel and the rest will follow! While we always hoped Nori would be an omni-channel brand, we focused solely on making Direct-to-Consumer a success, before entertaining Amazon and Wholesale. This channel-focus allowed us to understand our DTC marketing dynamics and ensure channel profitability before our focus was placed elsewhere. Bonus: As we gained market share via DTC, wholesale buyers proactively came to us. 3. Bet on Talented Freelancers. Our team is currently comprised of three full-time employees. We have kept our G&A expenses impressively low without compromising growth, by betting on talented marketing, PR, product and brand freelancers that have the same drive and incentive to grind as an early-stage founder.
